James, the son of Cooper and Hallie Overton, was born Sept. 30, 1930. He passed away on Saturday, Sept. 27.
James Marvin Overton was born and raised in the Seaboard, North Carolina area. He was the oldest of four siblings. He served proudly in the United States Army during the 1950s and 60s and was a combat veteran of the Korean War. His experience as
a mess-hall sergeant served his family well, especially during the holidays, as he certainly knew his way around a kitchen.
As a longtime member of St. Michael The Archangel Catholic Church, he previously served on the Knights of Columbus
Council 4156. He is a testament of someone coming to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior later in life, modeling the truth that it is never too late to have a relationship with God. He had a passion for the outdoors, and especially enjoyed fishing
and raising animals.
Other interests include his love for reading, and it didn’t get any better than a good old western novel by Louis L ‘Amour. Many feel this may have contributed to his spry and sharp wit he maintained well into his
golden years. A man of many talents, especially with his hands, James literally enjoyed working during his lifetime, and continued to work while in his ‘retirement’ until as recent as May of 2014. James’ legacy may be considered that of a ‘giver’.
While a man of modest means and possessions, he lived a rich life and generously gave to family and friends whatever he had to offer. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.
(2 Cor. 5:8)
