Funeral services for Albert J. Dunn Jr, 93, of
Leesville, will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, January 27, 2019 in the Labby Memorial Funeral Home of Leesville with Bro. Sandy Guynn officiating. Burial will follow in Leesville Cemetery.
Visitation will be Saturday, January 26, 2019
from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
He was born on December 22, 1925 in Slagle, Louisiana to his parents, Albert and Hazel Self Dunn. He passed away on January 24, 2019 in Leesville.
He lived in Texas and Arkansas. In the
summer of 1941 he moved back to Leesville then to Lake Charles. His family moved to Victoria, TX, but Al stayed and went to Leesville to Leesville High School in 1943 where he played football. He graduated from Leesville High School on May 23,
1944.
Al went back to Victoria, TX and enlisted in the United States Army at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX. He was placed in Infantry Training (Rifleman) at Camp Fannin, TX (The Battle of the Bulge was going on). Al volunteered for
Paratrooper Training at Ft Benning, GA (Germany surrendered during this time). Al volunteered for Parachute Demolition and Special Training and upon completion he was sent to Ft. Oro, CA. After his service in the Army, Al went back to Leesville and
started college at NSU in January 1947. He transferred to LA Tech and graduated in May 1952 with a degree in Civil Engineering.
He worked about 3 years for J. Ray McDermott as a Field Engineer before going to work for LA DOTD for 41 years,
going from Assistant Project Engineer to various other titles. He retired in January 1995. After retiring back to Leesville he worked with numerous other volunteer groups throughout the City of Leesville. Throughout his career he was a Life Member of
Louisiana Engineering Society, Louisiana Society of Professional Engineers in Civil Service, VFW Post 3106, American Legion Post 145, 11th Airborne Association, Static Line, Disabled American Veterans, Korean War Veterans Association, Association of
the U.S Army, Leesville High School Alumni Association, Lifetime member of the Heritage Family Association and the Vernon Historical and Genealogical Society.
Al is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Jerri Lamar Hicks Dunn, son,
David Scott Dunn, brother, Roger “W. R.” Dunn, sisters, Lydia Dunn Ballard and Alice Raye Dunn Lack.
Left to cherish his memory is his Sister-in-law, Ruby Blair Dunn and several nieces, nephews and many dear friends.
