EVANS — It just wasn’t meant to be.
The 10th-seeded Starks Lady Panthers pushed three runs across in the top of the sixth to overtake the seventh-ranked Evans Lady Eagles in picking up a 4-3 victory on Thursday in the Class C regional playoffs.
Evans, which finished the season with a record of 8-9, had opened up a 3-0 lead after the second inning of play.
Madi Gollihugh singled to open the second and took third when Brooklyn Jeter doubled. After a bunt single by McKenzie Stanley, the Lady Eagles found themselves with the bases loaded and no outs.
However, a lineout to third, resulted in a double play. But Riley Haus followed with a triple, scoring both Jeter and Stanley for a 2-0 lead for the Lady Eagles. A little later, Haus scored on a hit by Alexis Jeter to give the Lady Eagles a 3-run advantage.
Starks responded by scoring a run in the top of the third to get on the board, closing the gap to 3-1.
But after scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth, Starks came to life and scored three runs off of Jeane in the frame to claim a 4-3 lead.
Evans had two more at-bats to retake the lead. In the sixth, the Lady Eagles had runners at second and third with one out, but failed to score. In the seventh, the Lady Eagles went down in order, ending the season.
Alexis Jeter finished the game with three hits and an RBI, while Haus tripled and drove in two RBIs. Goliihugh and Jeane each had two hits in the loss.
Jeane pitched all seven innings, striking out 11 batters, while giving up four runs on five hits with a pair of walks.
