During the Leesville City Council meeting on Monday, Councilman Phillip Hunt thanked residents for understanding the garbage collection issue that has recently plagued the city.

“Waste Management is working on it,” Hunt said. “I still see a lot of piles so please be patient with them. It’s
not that it’s not seen, it’s just that they are short-handed.”

Hunt also mentioned helping out neighbors with their yards this summer — especially with the recent rains that have caused some lawns to get a bit out of hand.

“There’s nothing wrong with you stepping up to the plate and saying, ‘Hey, can I help cut your grass or cut your grass for you?’ Maybe you have a son or grandson that can help some of these people maintain their yards,” Hunt said.

The council also agreed to begin seeking bids for tree-cutting services for the Fort Polk Vegetation Contract and for painting services at both the annex municipal building and the old 911 building.

The will also enter a lease agreement with PNC Bank for golf carts for the city course.

The environmental review for the replacement of the ball park lift station funded through the CDBG-MIT Grant – Louisiana Watershed Initiative Program was also approved.

The annual Sherell Lewis Jr. Memorial Back to School Bash has been scheduled for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Martin Luther King Center. This event is hosted by the Jubilee Park Committee and sponsored by the city of Leesville.

At the bash, 75 free backpacks and school supplies will be given to the first 75 students who arrive. The backpacks will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.

“Bring your kids out and. There will be snacks and refreshments,” Councilwoman Willie Mae Kennedy said.

The council will meet again at 3 p.m. Monday, July 28.
