Laura Sagebiel Oakes

Laura Sagebiel Oakes, 96, of Leesville, died peacefully on Tuesday December
14, 2010, following a brief illness, at her daughter’s home in Leesville. Mrs. Oakes was a resident of Leesville for over forty years, lived previously in College Station, Texas for over 24 years, and from 2002 -07 in Tyler, Texas.
Survivors are one daughter, Madelynn Oakes Stephen (husband, Stephen P. Stephen), of Leesville, and one son, Carter Harvey Oakes (wife, Kay) of Fredrick, Okla.; one sister Margaret Sagebiel Harber, of Austin, Texas; one sister-in-law, Billie
Oakes of DeRidder; four grandchildren, Jon David Stephen, Randal Dewayne Oakes, Harvey Scott Stephen, Cynthia Denise Oakes Robb; and six great grandchildren: Amber Renee Oakes, Jenna Sue Oakes, Elliott Patrick Stephen, Ava Kathryn Stephen, Cy Edward
Stephen and Mia Emily Robb; and numerous nieces and nephews
Mrs. Oakes was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years Harvey Oakes (1975) and four brothers, Charley, Clem, Alvin, Theo and three sisters Emily West, Ruth Lang and Clara
Fish.
Laura Oakes was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in College Station, Texas for over 24 years and then one of the early members of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Leesville for over 40 years; she was very active in both churches,
serving as the organist, held offices on the church councils and in Missionary Society and LWML and on the Altar Guild. Mrs. Oakes was a member of the Our Savior Lutheran Church in Tyler, Texas for five years.
Laura Oakes was a very active
member in the following Leesville civic organizations: Civinettes (president, four years), Home Demonstration (president, one year) and Cowbells.
The family expresses their sincere appreciation to her physicians, the nursing staffs at Byrd
Regional Hospital, Hospice and Companion Care for the loving care provided to her during these last days of her life.
Funeral services will be held, Saturday, December 18, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Leesville with
Pastor Gary Archbold officiating. Burial will follow at the Pine Island (Pickering) Cemetery under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home of Leesville.
Visitations will be held Friday, December 17, 2010 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. and
on Saturday, December 18, 2010 from 9 a.m. until time of service at the church.
The family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church Improvement Fund in Leesville.
