Local teams perform well at state track meet

BATON ROUGE – Both Leesville and DeRidder High School made their mark Saturday at the Class 4A state track and field championships at Bernie Moore Stadium on the campus of Louisiana State University.
The Wampus Cats tied for ninth in the team standings, while the Lady Cats were 12th overall, edging out the Lady Dragons by one point in the girls' standings. The Dragons were tied for 21st.
The lone scorer for the Dragons was Derron Griffin in the shot put, where he was second with a throw of 49-3.75.
The Wampus Cats got two silver medal finishes from Antonio Blackwell in the 1600 and 3200 meters, while Jaymeion Henderson won bronze in the high jump.
Blackwell had a time of 4:34.41 in the 1600 meters, while clocking in at 10:12.63 in the 3200 meters. Henderson cleared a height of 5-11.5 to earn third in the high jump.
On the girls' side, Lina Zacapa-Mills scored in all three of her events for the Lady Cats, claiming the bronze in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:32.69. She was fourth in the 3200 meters and placed sixth in the 800-meter run.
Leesville's other scoring came from the 1600-meter relay team of LaMayah Lake, Za'Rieah Foster, Monica Ortiz and Ariyah Green. They placed fifth overall in their event.
As for the Lady Dragons, three finished in fourth place, just missing out on the medal stand.
Cameron Mount, Joelle Terry and Maison Wilbanks were fourth in the pole vault, triple jump and high jump, respectively.
Hailee Henry added a sixth-place finish in the discus.
In the team standings, Vandebilt Catholic won the girls' crown, while Westgate claimed the boys' championship.
