Tigers take upset win over Florien, 3-1

FLORIEN – Three runs was all it took.
The 12th-seeded Pitkin Tigers scored three times in the third inning and that was more than enough as they upset the No. 5 Florien Blackcats on Monday I. The Class B regional playoffs, 3-1.
With the victory, Pitkin advanced to the Class B quarterfinals, where it will go on the road once again, this time to 20th-ranked Monterey, which upset fourth-seeded Zwolle on Monday, 5-2.
The game has yet to be scheduled, but it must be completed by Saturday.
Florien took the initial lead of the game as Gage Remedies drove in Kaleb Carver with an RBI-double in the bottom of the first.
But the Tigers responded in the top of the third as Hunner Perkins drove in both Connor Goleman and Ethan West thanks to a two-run double. A little later, Perkins crossed on an RBI-double from catcher Isaac Longino as Pitkin took a 3-1 lead.
Starting pitcher Zeke Lentz pitched into the fifth before giving way to West, who worked the final inning and two-thirds.
Florien was unable to find the scoreboard again as Pitkin picked up the upset win.
Lentz gave up one run on six hits with five strikeouts in five and a third innings, while West earned the save as he surrendered one hit and fanned three.
West also had two hits and a run scored. Perkins lone hit was the two-run double, while Longino had a double and an RBI. Goleman went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Gage Remedies suffered the loss, scattering seven hits over seven innings with seven strikeouts. He also drove in the lone run for Florien with a double. Tate Rutherford had two hits for the Blackcats in the loss.
