SIMPSON — It was a struggle to the very end.

But ultimately, it was Evans to prevail over Hicks as the Eagles won on the road in District 3-C play on Tuesday night, 47-44, in a wild overtime affair.

“I’m just so proud of our kids and how they competed tonight,” Evans head coach Daniel Fletcher said. “Both of the teams out there tonight just competed. We just have to keep competing if we want a first-round playoff game at home.”

With the win, Evans has crept its way back into the thick of the district competition with just three games remaining on the schedule. The Eagles are two games out of first place, which is currently owned by Simpson.

Evans jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead behind a three-pointer from Brentley Jeane and a couple of baskets by Wyatt Austin. By the end of the first period, the Eagles were up, 9-5.

HIcks, however, battled back during the second period, going on a 12-0 run of its own to build a bit of a lead. But Evans bounced back to take a 21-18 advantage at the intermission as Zane West hit three straight three-pointers to end the half for the Eagles.

During the second half, the Eagles managed to push their lead out to eight points as it appeared as if the Pirates might go down without a fight, trailing Evans, 30-22, going into the fourth period.

But Hicks refused to die, using a 19-11 surge to send the game into an extra session tied at 41-41.

In overtime, the Pirates were unable to get things going offensively as Evans used a 6-3 edge in the four-minute session to secure the big victory.

Austin led all scorers with 17 points, while West finished with 14 points. Jeane chipped in with eight points.

Landon Goodwin paced Hicks with 13 points, while Conner Helton and Brayden Doyle tacked on nine and eight points, respectively, in the loss for the Pirates.
