Rosepine sweeps past Pine into state quarterfinals

ROSEPINE — The top-ranked Rosepine Eagles knocked off No. 16 Pine by sweeping a best-of-three series over the weekend, rallying to win Game 1 and completely dominating Game 2.

Rosepine (30-2) will play the Mangham Dragons at home in a best-of-three series in the Class 2A state quarterfinals May 6-7.

Game 1

Rosepine 6, Pine 4

The Rosepine Eagles had to rally late to knock off a valiant effort by Pine, 6-4.

The Eagles took the initial lead of the game in the bottom of the first, 2-0. However, Pine scored four times in the top of the fourth to move ahead, 4-2.

But the Eagles scored once in the bottom of the fourth and pushed three runs across in the sixth to secure the victory.

Braden Trull earned the win on the mound, giving up four runs on five hits with eight strikeouts. He also hit a home run and had two RBIs.

Logan Calcote added two hits and two runs scored, while Grant Ducote had a triple and two RBIs.

Game 2

Rosepine 21, Pine 1

The second game was all Rosepine as the Eagles raced out to an 8-0 lead en route to a 21-1 victory over Pine.

The Eagles scored three times in the first, four times in the second and once in the third before Pine broke into the scoring column. However, the Eagles continued to roll, scoring one more in the fourth before plating 12 in the fifth to close out the game.

Casey Tilley earned the win on the mound, going four innings and striking out three, giving up one run on one hit.

Calcote had five hits, including a double, with four runs scored and four RBIs. Ethan Frey was a single short of the cycle as he doubled, tripled and homered, scoring four times and driving in three runs. Aden Cline added three hits, while Ducote and Dalton Keel each drove in three runs.
